ATLETICO MADRID VS CHELSEA: PREDICTIONS
When the Champions League last-16 draw was made in December, this was tipped to be one of the most interesting ties. Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid had a strong lead at the top of the La Liga table, while Frank Lampard’s Chelsea were going through in interesting period around the top four. But a lot has changed.
Well, for Atletico Madrid, they are still top of La Liga but that lead has been cut short, with the Spanish side in poor form by their own high standards this season, winning just one of their past four league matches. They are winless in two going into this match, drawing and then losing to Levante, the latter handing Atletico Madrid their first home league defeat since December 2019.
At Chelsea, Lampard is no more, sacked in January and replaced by Thomas Tuchel, who has overseen an upturn in form, still unbeaten in seven games across all competitions with five wins and two draws. But at the weekend they were held to a disappointing draw by a Southampton side that had lost their past six league matches, having to come from behind thanks to a Mason Mount penalty.
Chelsea had a good experience in the Champions League under Lampard this season, however, winning four and drawing two of their six group matches, conceding just two goals. At the same time, Atletico Madrid were slightly less impressive, only finishing five points ahead of Red Bull Salzburg with two wins, three draws and a defeat.
ATLETICO MADRID VS CHELSEA: MATCH STATS
Although Chelsea were one of the top scorers in the Champions League group stage, netting 14 times, they have struggled in front of goal under Tuchel. The Blues have hit the target with just 31.8% of their shots in the Premier League since the German took charge and scored eight goals, three of which came from the penalty spot. At the same time, Atletico have fixed a lot of the defensive problems that plagued them in the group stage.
But don’t expect this to be a goal fest. Atletico Madrid aren’t known for their goalscoring and netted just seven times in the group stage, while Chelsea conceded just twice. And the Blues have re-found that defensive form under Tuchel, with Takumi Minamino the first opposition player to score against them in seven matches at the weekend (one own goal, five clean sheets).
